Dust Extraction

Dust Extraction

As we all know, when working in construction dust is an inevitability. Materials such as concrete produce huge amounts of silica dust when worked with on an industrial scale. This dust can be extremely hazardous to an employee’s health with it leading to a number of very serious illness such as silicosis, asthma, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Therefore, it is very important that employers have the correct dust management procedures in place to protect their workforce against these harmful particles. For more information about construction dust and possible control methods, please refer to the HSE’s information sheet (http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/cis36.pdf).

The most effective method of control is on-tool extraction, a type of local exhaust ventilation (LEV) system that is portable enough to fit directly onto a tool. Think of it as a vacuum that can extract dust before it is released into the air. However, these methods of control need to be regularly monitored to ensure that they are effective and provide an appropriate level of protection – legislation states that these LEVs must be inspected at least every 40 months. This is where Earlsmere’s TOOLMINDER can come in handy.

TOOLMINDER is a piece of software developed by Earlsmere to help companies track and trace all of their assets, tools and hand-held machinery. Currently TOOLMINDER is designed with HAV monitoring and PAT testing in mind, however, we are constantly looking for ways to broaden its usage to fit any industrial requirement. TOOLMINDER can already store records of a tools usage and monitor vibrations, however, in the future we hope to include LEV data to fully utilise its health and safety monitoring potential. TOOLMINDER can already be used to schedule maintenance and tests, alerting you before they are due, which would be ideal to ensure you never forget the 40 monthly LEV inspection.
